Do you ever find yourself physically present, but mentally you’re a million miles away? You're in the room, but your mind is stuck elsewhere, replaying old tapes, or agonizing over the same repeating questions.
You want to be present. You know you need to be present. Yet, no matter how important the moment, you’re not quite there, and that awareness only makes you feel worse. You feel like you’re letting others down. You feel like you’re letting yourself down. And you just want to know what is the matter with you and how to get it to stop.
Your mind is so active, you can’t concentrate on work. You can’t even focus on a book, so you decide to watch a movie you’re excited to see. Five minutes in and you realize you have no idea what’s going on – you can’t even name the characters. You start it over. Ten minutes in you notice the same thing. When it happens a third time, you give up on the movie with disappointment. Even when you’re trying to have fun or just relax, your mind is hijacked.

You know those annoying group chats with dozens of people in them? One person says something not terribly important and your phone dings. Then 20 people respond with something insignificant – “sounds good” or “got it.” Ding. Ding. Ding… Next, 40 more respond with a thumbs up or heart emoji. Ding. Ding. Ding…
Each interruption robs you of your focus and attention on the conversation, task, or activity at hand. And it doesn’t just take your focus and attention for the split second it takes to grab your phone and read the text, it can take minutes to get back into true concentration and focus.
The overactive mind is even worse. Those endless questions – “WTF just happened?” “How did I let this happen?” “Am I the problem?” are unrelenting, and the mental noise is like trying to attend to four different conversations when everyone is speaking at the same time. (With five kids, this scenario was quite real for me.)
The mental noise is all-consuming, stealing your attention from a work project, a good book, your workout, or your family dinner. Next thing you know, you’ve walked upstairs and don’t know why, you’re standing in the garage with your keys, but you don’t remember where you wanted to go, or you are stuck working into the wee hours of the morning to avoid missing a deadline.
This unrelenting mental noise is the ultimate attention disruptor.
The silent loss of presence: missing out on your own life
The loss of presence just makes me sad. Once a moment has passed, it has gone. We can choose to be present in each moment, or we can blindly move through the day, and miss the opportunity to see love, beauty, inspiration, hope, and more.

"How present are you with your loved ones, with your work, with yourself?"
"How often do you experience the beauty of the sunset or notice a flower has bloomed?"
"How often do you move through the day without experiencing any of it?"
You might be thinking, “I can see another sunrise or flower bloom,” and that’s true, but many moments are life-changing. Would you rather listen intently to your teen open up about their relationship or disinterestedly say, 'uh-huh' while your mind is replaying old thoughts? Will you ever get that moment back? How will your relationship with your teen change based on your actions?
This constant mental wandering and distraction has a profound impact beyond just concentration and these missed moments. It subtly, yet powerfully, erodes your peace, impacts your health, and strains your most meaningful connections.
